All support staff employed by the CCT are required to complete our six-month "Competency Based Training" (CBT) course. The CBT is a training course for staff working with people who are challenged by developmental disabilities and exhibit challenging behaviours.

This course contains a comprehensive range of skills that will help you to become a competent and effective support worker. The CBT's are completed in parallel with daily support duties. To demonstrate competence for each module, staff must meet specific criteria such as written tests, field assignments, and role plays. Any individual completing this course, and demonstrating the required competencies, is well equipped to provide support for some of the most challenging of situations.

This is a self-learning package. Staff are given the information in written and video form. When they feel confident they know and understand the information they sit a written test or role-play situations to show competence. If staff have difficulty with the written format they may sit the test's verbally.

There are three levels (1,2 and 3) within the CBT framework. It is expected that the first level (8 modules) will be completed within six months of staff beginning their employment with the CCT.

Staff who wish to undertake further training have the opportunity to complete Levels 2 & 3 of the CBT. Level 2 is optional and has a 90% competency pass rate required. Level 3 positions need to be applied for. An interview will take place and successful participants will have shown a strong understanding and commitment to positive programming, full inclusion and will also have some knowledge of the basic principles of behaviour.

External Training

Wherever possible, financial assistance will be given to assist with staff training, should an employee wish to undertake further approved external training in their specialist area of work.

In addition to the CBT's, the CCT provides the following for staff...

• A Three day Orientation Training seminar, which covers
  • Trust Philosophy
  • Policy & Procedures
  • Developmental Disabilities
  • Documentation/Report Writing
  • People's Rights & Ethics
  • Basic Behavioural Principles
• Professional Supervision, with a qualified professional supervisor at a minimum of 1 hour every second month, although monthly is preferred. This is an opportunities for staff to look at their professional work practices each month
• Specialist training seminars/conferences
• In-house training sessions, at least once a month (in-services).
• Access to a 24-hour pager system, that ensures there is always access to experienced support on hand to assist with crises etc
• Fortnightly staff meeting for each service. This allows good support, open and clear communication and strong teamwork.
